BBC Radio 1 has shot out a warning to the younger jobseekers in its youthful demographic that inappropriate and incautious social media use can be hugely damaging to an individual’s career.

Carrying advice from industry bodies the Recruitment Society and Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), a Radio 1 report this morning, repeated online, suggested using a ‘gran test’ – asking “would my mum or gran approve of what I am posting?” while active on social media. If the answer is no, the suggestion is not to risk it.

Both bodies warn that it is legal for employers to search social media sites, with the CIPD’s skills policy adviser Katerina Rüdiger saying: “We all have nights out but it is best not to advertise it.”
