SThree chief executive Russell Clements says his interest in “making businesses scalable and replicable” was one attraction of serving as non-executive chairman of a visual analytics start-up, cube19, as he prepares to depart from the multi-million pound recruitment business.

Earlier this month, cube19 announced £1.1m in funding from Clements and other investors. The business intelligence product provides optimised and relevant real-time information to individual users.
In an exclusive interview with Recruiter, Clements discussed his involvement with cube19, founded by his former SThree employee Dan McGuire. Clements tells Recruiter: “cube19 coincides with one of the things I’ve been very passionate about…which is how do you make businesses scalable and replicable – I mean, we’ve got 64 offices in 18 countries.

“One of the things that was most important to us was actually investing in systems and processes very early in the history of the business that really gave us a platform to expand around the UK, then to expand on an international basis and ultimately to move into other sectors. So it’s been an absolutely key element of our success to date. One aspect was actually the power of information. We talk a lot at SThree about fact-based decision-making, for example.”

Clements went on to tell Recruiter about the key challenge for cube19 at this stage in its development:

He went on to discuss his view of technology in the current business environment in this video:

Clements also praised cube19 founder McGuire. “You back people as much as you back businesses, and as much as I think cube19’s a great business … Dan’s passion and track record was a big part of that as well.”
