As demand for food production increases globally, demand for fertiliser salespeople and traders across emerging markets will continue on an upward trend, according to global financial markets recruiter Selby Jennings.
According to the International Fertilizer Industry Association, during 2010-11, global consumption of fertilisers increased by 6.2%, with the following year seeing an estimated 3% growth, which would bring total use to 178.2m tonnes. The manufacturing centres of Brazil, Russia and China are growing into the biggest markets. As trading houses invest in these markets, which have a less regulated industry than other commodities, Joe McGrath, commodities consultant at Selby Jennings, says: “There has been a constant upward trend in the hiring of fertiliser sales and traders working across the emerging markets.”
He points to potash as a particularly fast-growing space. Local language ability is important in these markets and success is also dependent upon existing connections and an ability to build strong relationships, the company says.
