REC’s Green warns ‘dodgy’ industry players

Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) chief executive Kevin Green (pictured right) warned an audience of recruiters and suppliers last night that the organisation was going to “shine a bright light” on the practices of “payroll, umbrella companies and the dodgy non-REC recruiters”.

Speaking at the Institute of Recruitment Professionals’ annual awards event last night (25 October), Green used his welcome speech as a platform to reflect on “tough questions” the industry has recently faced about exploitation of candidates and travel and subsistence schemes.

“Now we have a choice,” Green said. “We either wholly embrace being a mature professional industry with robust standards, or we will continue to be perceived as wheeler dealers out to make a fast buck.”

He noted that from last July, all new applicants for REC membership had to undergo a “rigorous” online test before being granted membership. From January, the testing will be applied to all existing members.

“But this is not enough on its own, we have to go further,” he said. “So from tonight we say firstly to all the payroll, umbrella companies and the dodgy non-REC recruiters: ‘We are going to shine a bright light on your dubious practices and expose you to the world’.”

He went on to say: “To REC members we will continue to hold you to the letter of our code of conduct regardless of your size or who you are. Many people in the industry say ‘Let sleeping dogs lie’ but you only have to look at those that turn a blind eye to wrong-doing to see that we have no choice but to expose the things that undermine the vast majority of legitimate recruitment businesses.”
