The Malaysia government says that the country’s shipbuilding and ship repairing industry should generate 20,000 employment opportunities by 2020, in addition to the 30,000 people currently working in the industry nationally.
But according to international trade and industry minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, a major challenge is the shortage of talent. Currently, he says: "Basic ship repairing and shipbuilding is done in Malaysia but when it comes to the finishing touches, it goes elsewhere. This due to the lack of skilled manpower and we need to address it.”This is among the issues being addressed in the ‘Malaysia Shipbuilding/Ship Repairing Strategic Plan 2020’, which “is designed to put the country on the global map of major shipbuilding nations”. Mustapa concludes: "The strategic plan helps chart the highly potential sector's growth and provide the framework for its development in a structured and well-planned manner.”
