Worky.com aims to shake up online recruitment

Serial entrepreneur Ray Nolan has launched an online recruitment site in Ireland which he believes will change the way employers hire and candidates get hired.

Worky.com has attracted more than 10,000 candidates in just over a week and Nolan told Recruiter that 55% of these indicated they aren’t necessarily looking for a job at the moment.

“If this trend continues, we’ll have achieved what we wanted to do with Worky, which is to create a place where recruiters don’t even have to advertise for a job — they go in and get matches immediately.”

Worky.com allows users to upload profiles detailing salary expectations, location preferences, skills and other information, and the site matches these against a database of jobs uploaded by employers. Candidates can keep their identities hidden and change their settings to show whether they are actively looking for a new job. Employers can match with candidates for free and only pay if they decide to engage with them (from as little as €25 [£22.40] per candidate). Worky also acts as a communication platform between the two sides.

Nolan, who founded Hostelworld. com, an online booking service for the hostel industry which went from dotcom start-up in 1999 to a business in 220 countries today, believes the current “tired” model of job boards often fails to engage candidates.

“Worky.com is not rocket science,” he said. “We’re doing what was a logical thing to have done 10 years ago. Job sites didn’t really get there — fluff around the edges aside, many job sites deliver classified ads and there it ends.”

Although it has initially been rolled out in Ireland, Nolan said the site is multilingual and multi-currency and aims to be in a further five English-speaking jurisdictions by the end of the year. He has ambitiously described Worky as being “Google-esque” in its potential and doesn’t believe the “big guns” in the job site sector have an answer to his model.

“In three years time there will be one winner in this space,” he said. “And it’ll be Worky or something like it which will be the recruitment platform of choice.”
