Workplace depression

Returning to work can aid recovery from depression

Returning to work can alleviate depression, according to new research.

The research, published in the journal Occupational Medicine, shows that resuming work can aid recovery from depression. The Society of Occupational Medicine report recommends a reduction in hours, a review of an employee’s tasks before they come back to work and that line managers contact the employee every fortnight.

The study claims that flexibility is vital to the recovery of the employee.

Dr Gordon Parker, president of the Society of Occupational Medicine, told the journal:  “Employers are often frightened of contacting an employee whose sick note says ‘depression’ for fear of being accused of harassment, but sympathetic contact with the employee and early help through occupational health can identify the most appropriate support.”
