In response to ’Don’t believe the social media hype’ (Recruiter, 31 March)
In the same way that the internet changed how we booked travel and has drastically impacted travel agencies, social media will eliminate the middleman for jobseekers and job providers. Social media isn’t working for recruiters but it’s working for everyone else.

Geoff Newman makes some very good points in this article. However, I believe the main point is that social media should be seen as another route to market. It will not take over from established routes but can add another string to a recruiting organisation’s bow. It takes time but needs to be used effectively. My advice is either use it or leave it. Many people have started blogs in the past and let them lapse (I am guilty of this myself). Facebook and other social networks have a place but the clue may well be in the name ’social’. Maybe people should use business networking sites like LinkedIn as recruitment channels and leave Facebook to people who want to share their pics and stuff.

In response to ’HR sector analysis’ (Recruiter, 3 March)
If employers require HR talent but are struggling to find it, why do they not do outreach to universities and search for high level HR Masters students who have the knowledge and ability to learn at a high level? Also most MA courses do not lead the students to Graduate CIPD status. I have an MA in HR development and CIPD status but due to lack of experience I now find myself in the Welfare to Work sector helping to reduce unemployment (ironic, huh?) - when I really want to be in HR.
