The National Trust has launched a new apprenticeship scheme to tackle the building skills shortage in the heritage sector.

The full time three-year programme, aimed primarily at 16–19 year olds, will train apprentices in traditional skills, including stone masonry, carpentry, joinery, lead work, plumbing, painting and decorating.

From September, sixteen apprentices will train alongside staff due to retire at National Trust properties across the country to provide continuity of valued skills by enabling those who are retiring to teach and mentor the next generation.

The apprenticeship scheme will be funded by the Trust’s own funds and each apprentice will be paid £12,000 a year. College and tuition fees will also be covered.
