London is still the most popular destination for jobseekers, according to a poll from jobsite Totaljobs.com.

The poll surveyed over 66,000 employees from 40 countries and found that, of respondents willing to work abroad, 22% opted for London, followed by New York and Sydney with 16% and 12% respectively.

The research also shows that country and not city was of greater importance to 66% of respondents. The most popular destination country was the US (52%) followed by the UK (47%) and Canada (43%).

Of the 2,600 UK employees polled, 46% were willing to look for work abroad, with the US (62%), Australia (51%) and Canada (49%) the three most popularly cited countries.

Almost a quarter (23%) said a poor economy was their reason for leaving.

John Salt, website director at Totaljobs.com, says: “Contrary to popular belief, those coming to the UK for jobs are well educated and ambitious, often providing much needed skills in the UK economy.

“While the UK is popular with jobseekers today, we predict an increase in competition for talent as the recession and exchange rates start to hit pay packets.”

“For UK workers seeking brighter skies and better opportunities overseas, it is important they remember how competitive the market is and to ensure they consider the motivations of those they will be competing with for jobs.”
