Candidates with a history of job-hopping are a major turn-off for recruiters, according to a survey by online recruiting software company Bullhorn.

In a survey of 1,500 recruiters and hiring managers, 39% said that a history of hopping between jobs was the single biggest obstacle to an unemployed candidate regaining employment, along with leaving an employer in the first year.

Three in 10 (31%) considered being out of work for more than a year as the greatest challenge, followed by gaps in employment history (28%).

Unsurprisingly, 78% of recruiters said that getting fired was the most damaging event affecting a candidate’s employment prospects.
