IT recruitment suffers from ‘techie geek’ perception

IT recruitment is suffering due to a perception of IT professionals as ‘techie geeks’ with little or no social skills and prone to working excessive hours.

The survey commissioned by IT recruitment firm GCS revealed that the general view of IT professionals for 40% of respondents is one of ‘techie geeks’ unable to function socially.

Respondents also felt that the industry is largely male dominated with 12% of respondents thinking IT is a male preserve.

Chris Bartlett, GCS managing director said: “The IT industry needs to take significant and swift action now to make the necessary changes to avoid a serious shortage of staff and ensure profitable growth in the future.

“It’s a common misconception that the IT industry is full of ‘techie geeks’ working in back offices, when in fact the reality is that it’s now much more diverse. Part of the challenge is creating a balanced image to attract the right candidates.”
