Fit note guidance for employers

Employers can access advice on getting people that are off work due to illness back into employment with the introduction of fit note guidance launched today.

Employers can access advice on getting people that are off work due to illness back into employment with the introduction of fit note guidance launched today.

Government estimates that the fit note, in place of the traditional sick note, will save the UK economy an estimated £240m over the decade.

From 6 April, doctors will advise if a patient ‘may be fit for work’ and provide advice on the effects of their health condition. Doctors will have the option to advise that their patient would be able to work, subject to the employer’s agreement, if temporary employment changes such as less working hours or alterations to duties could be accommodated.

Dr Bill Gunnyeon, chief medical adviser at DWP, says: “From the outset, the development of the fit note has been a collaborative effort. It demonstrates what can be achieved when government, healthcare professionals, employers and other key stakeholders work closely together towards a common goal. We need to continue this good work once the fit note is in place to ensure it delivers the benefits it should for individuals, employers and GPs.”
