Diary of... Carolyn Ayles Head of PR recruitment, Ad Lib

Monday

Monday

Early morning meeting to discuss current vacancies, share candidates and revenue forecast for this month. It’s a good way to motivate and focus the team at the beginning of the week — and the coffee and croissants help! Review email applications from over the weekend and telephone interview any candidates who immediately stand out. A happy Monday — I hear back on a successful interview for a short-term contract marketing manager role and receive a permanent offer for a PR consultant.

Tuesday

Spend time with new consultant, Helen, who’s managing agency-side recruitment. We discuss applications she’s received and how to write in Ad Lib’s copy style. I write a quarterly newsletter for our candidates, so I spend time researching industry news to include. It’s not revenue-generating but we put a lot of focus into CRM [customer-relationship management] as it pays valuable dividends in the long-run. Dash off at 5.30pm to get to college for a part-time Chartered Institute of Marketing course I’m studying to develop a deeper understanding of the industry I recruit in.

Wednesday

Take a brief for a new marketing job, write the ad copy and post it across our specialist job boards. Our own website emails 156 job alerts to people who have subscribed in that category. I focus on resourcing and networking using LinkedIn and Twitter. Interviews at the office result in a very strong candidate who I shortlist. Finish candidate newsletter and send out to 1,500 subscribers.

Thursday

Early start to manage over-night applications. A client calls to request four interviews. They liked all of our candidates — great news. Lunch with the MD of a regional marketing agency to discuss recruitment and retention plans for Q2. It’s a positive session and their plans are encouraging in the current climate.

Friday

After several interviews, compile a strong shortlist which I submit to yesterday’s client for review. Lunch at desk and quick peek at places to visit in New Zealand as I’m going there on my honeymoon in July! Spend the afternoon creating a client e-shot as part of my ongoing business development with the PR industry. Grateful for a chilled beer in the office at 5pm and then home to crash on the sofa with my fiancé.
