Contractors positive about contracting, finds survey

Seven out of 10 contractors (68%) choose contracting because of the flexibility it offers in choosing how and when they work, according to a survey by umbrella firm FPS Group and ContractJobs.com

Seven out of 10 contractors (68%) choose contracting because of the flexibility it offers in choosing how and when they work, according to a survey by umbrella firm FPS Group and ContractJobs.com
And contrary to the view that people have been forced into contract work because of the current shortage of permanent jobs, only 30% of contractors say they work the way they do out of economic necessity.The survey and accompanying report ‘The State of the Contractor Nation’ also indicates that the majority of contractors (60%) intend to carry on as contractors in the long run.
When it comes to how finding roles, the survey found that recruitment agencies are the first port of call, with 70% of those surveyed using them, and 42% securing their current position through an agency.
Almost a year after the introduction of the Agency Workers Regulations, only one in 10 contractors believe the legislation has benefitted them, while over half feel it has not had a positive impact at all.
Matt Huddleston, chief financial officer, FPS Group, says: “AWR is, in theory, very positive for contractors, but it seems fewer of them than the government might have hoped know what the benefits are or the rights they now have, which perhaps explains why there have been few reported claims against employers to date.”
