Retailer Argos is looking to recruit 12,000 workers across its UK and Ireland stores in the run up to Christmas – a temporary workforce boosting by just under 50% its existing 25,000 staff.

The three month roles may lead to permanent employment in some cases, the company says, although this is at the discretion of individual store managers, HR and the requirements of the store.
It also is inviting summer seasonal workers with travel company TUI, operator of Thomson and First Choice, to apply for its roles, the second year that this partnership has been in place.

Argos says staff will benefit from flexible working hours and training, a 10% staff discount at Argos and 20% off at sister company Homebase. The vast majority of workers (9,170) will be employed in England, with a further 978 in Scotland, 756 in Wales, 670 in the Republic of Ireland and 425 in Northern Ireland.

Argos claims that 95% of the UK and Ireland population live within 10 miles of one of the company’s 739 stores, making the new roles widely accessible.

Recruitment advertising and applications via the Christmas section of Argos' careers site are now live.

  • Supermarket Sainsbury's announced it would hire 15,000 seasonal workers last week, as reported on recruiter.co.uk, with such workers making up a much smaller percentage of its workforce than at Argos - Sainsbury's employs around 150,000 people.
