Disabled workers are due to stage a four-day strike in protest at job losses resulting from government plans to sell off Remploy factories.

Members of the GMB and Unite unions at Remploy sites in Chesterfield and Glasgow plan to walk out on 28 August. The walk-out follows a series of UK-wide strikes by disabled workers, protesting against the closure of Remploy factories.

According to The Guardian, a GMB official said 25 Remploy factories shut last week, as a result of controversial government plans to switch spending to help individual workers find jobs in mainstream sectors.

Half of Remploy’s 54 factories are due to close by the end of the year, a further 18 will close or be sold next year and the remaining nine face an uncertain future.
