Multi-sector recruiter Specialist Solutions UK has launched work4experience.com (w4e), a service that offers small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and in particular micro-businesses of fewer than 10 people the opportunity to take on young people on an unpaid basis over a period of 12 weeks.

A press release from Specialist says that w4e will see companies “get an extra helping pair of hands for a period of 12 weeks without employment costs and obligations”, which it says will combat “the old adage of not being able to get a job due to lack of experience and not being able to get experience without a job”.The company’s website makes clear that the scheme is not exclusively for younger people, but for any who do not have formal experience.

Specialist Solutions would only receive payment if, at the end of that 12-week period, the employer chooses to take the individual on in a paid role, in which case managing director Teval Stephens tells Recruiter that the company would charge a “nominal fee” of around £200. Another potential outcome of the schemes would be the company taking the individual on as an apprentice through the providers it works with.

Stephens also says that the candidate’s engagement with the company is on a voluntary basis, adding: “It is no different to internships, school work experience etc, in terms of legalities, as long the employer has all the right insurances and health and safety policies etc.”

He adds that the scheme “will give youngsters very valuable experience… at the same time giving a boost in production to those companies involved, in turn boosting the economy”.

Stephens says that the idea came about from his own experiences of launching Specialist four years ago, commenting: “I have been growing a business from start-up and know the challenge of needing an extra pair of hands but reluctant to recruit due to the risks and costs associated ie. wages, tax, and to be able to provide continuous employment for the worker.”
