A 4.8% month-on-month decline in the number of new job opportunities in June should not rule out optimism in the job market, says Martin Warnes, managing director of jobsite Reed.co.uk.

Reed.co.uk’s index is based on jobs posted on the site, which were up 7.4% in June compared to the same month the previous year, meaning the index stands at 134, compared with 125 in June 2011.Warnes says: “Following two months of encouraging figures, we can say with some confidence that the UK jobs market is in a significantly healthier position than it was this time last year.”

The sectors showing the strongest growth in new roles were motoring & automotive (79%), health & medicine (66%) and social care (61%).

The sector with the greatest index score was engineering, at 243, also showing 34% annual growth.

Meanwhile, part-time roles made up 6% of all job opportunities, compared to just 3% this time last year.

East Anglia was the only region to see a fall in job availability, albeit of just 0.65%, while jobs grew by 18% in Northern Ireland, and 16% and 14% respectively in the East and West Midlands.

The index confirms national salary growth remains flat, registering 0% annual and monthly growth. Overall, the Reed Salary Index now stands at 98 as it did last month and in June 2011.
