The unemployment rate in Ireland has risen to an 18-year high of 14.9%.
The previous record high was 15% in March 1994. In contrast, the rate= stood at less than 5% for the entire period 2000-2008.The total number of unemployed males, at 296,000, was almost twice that of females, at 162,000.
In 2011, over 75,000 people left Ireland to seek work abroad in other English-speaking nations – primarily Australia, Canada and the UK.
