The New Zealand police force has launched a new recruitment advertisement, which puts issues of suicide and mental ill health at the forefront of challenges new recruits would face.

The poster shows a woman hiding from demons, supported by a police officer.

And this approach has been welcomed by the Mental Health Foundation. The organisation’s chief executive Judi Clements also praises the “work of the police in recruiting people from local communities and from a diverse range of cultures, with values such as compassion and empathy, which are necessary in working with people in mental distress”.
