Australia’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.1%, despite economists’ expectations it would rise to 5.3%.
The number of people in work rose by 46,300 to 11,463,900, in a country with a population of 22m.As in the UK, where unemployment was up in last week’s latest figures, there was a trend toward part-time working in the country, with nearly three-quarters of the new entrants to the labour market working part time, despite part-time employment making up less than a third of all jobs in the country.
