Manchester Airport is offering framework deals for construction consultants for work estimated at up to £1 billion over the next 15 years. Areas to be covered include quantity surveying, project management, architecture and landscape, and structural and mechanical engineering.


The NHS is to advertise its business case for a single Internet-enabled finance and e-procurement system in the Official Journal of the European Communities in late September. Responses will be due by January and the contract awarded by December next year.


Automotive electronics supplier TRW will invest £17 million and create 150 jobs at its Birmingham factory over the next two years. The plant, which already employs 650 people, will develop five new products for car makers.


Clothing company William Baird has lost its appeal court case against Marks & Spencer and had its claim for £53.6 million compensation rejected. The Scottish firm sued Marks & Spencer for losses and damages after the retailer dropped it as a clothing supplier in 1999 after a 30-year partnership.


E-commerce is headed for tough times in UK businesses, but e-procurement is one of the few areas that has a quantifiable business benefit, according to Richard Barrington, director for industry at the government’s Office of the e-envoy. But he warned buyers to guard against pressure to upgrade IT systems without a business case being made first.
