Northern Irish electricity company the Viridian Group has warned that the Republic of Ireland could face power shortages as new power plants are unlikely to be built in time to meet demand. The group urged the Irish government to build a large power station every two years if it is to meet the 5 per cent annual growth in demand.


PowerGen Renewables has called on the government to speed up the planning process for wind farm developments. Chris Morris, general manager of the wind farm company, told a parliamentary conference on renewable and sustainable energy that councils often fail to help developers in the face of local opposition.
