The Indian defence ministry has been accused of exploiting the deaths of soldiers in Kashmir two years ago by taking commission on the purchase of their coffins. The Indian comptroller and auditor-general said it overpaid for the 500 aluminium coffins and 3,000 body bags with no contract acceptance test or evaluation.

BT MarketSite, the indirect e-procurement marketplace, has signed up computer peripherals company MicroWarehouse, bringing its total number of clients to nearly 200. MicroWarehouse joins other companies on MarketSite’s roster including Boots, Powergen and Credit Suisse First Boston.


Market liberalisation in the water industry will not work through common carriage, according to Tony Ballance, former chief economist at regulator Ofwat.


John Howe, deputy chief executive of the Defence Procurement Agency, will join the UK subsidiary of French electronics group Thomson-CSF on a two-year secondment. The firm is Britain’s second largest defence electronics contractor, after BAe Systems.


European procurement rules have forced the Ministry of Defence to offer a £1 billion deal to upgrade the armed forces’ singles accommodation blocks to just one bidder. Defence Estates was prevented from offering the contract to three companies as it could not define the value and workload of the second tranche of work on the project.


One in 10 e-business projects has been cancelled since 11 September, AMR Research’s biannual survey has revealed. Another 10 per cent of planned projects have been put on hold, although nearly half of these are likely to go ahead by the third quarter of next year.
