Outsourced e-procurement company Alliente has opened a European headquarters in Rotterdam and appointed Steve Koutros, former head of e-procurement at consultancy Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, as its managing director.


Sir John Egan, author of the influential 1998 report Rethinking Construction, has been appointed chairman of the construction industry’s e-procurement portal Asite. The portal aims to unite the supply chain with product catalogues, online tendering and material purchasing.


Supermarket Safeway’s UK rail freight strategy has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category. The honour recognises the contribution made by the supermarket’s supply strategy to the environment, society and the wider economy. By using rail for the daily transportation of many goods, Safeway avoided 5,596 road journeys in 2000 and 2001.

Senior buyers at Tesco have agreed to a private meeting with Farmers for Action, the group of agricultural suppliers demanding extra payment for their produce. The agreement falls short of the farmers’ demand to meet Terry Leahy, Tesco’s chief executive, but has removed the threat of blockades of its depots.
