When the first edition of this book was published, in 1988, just-in-time (JIT) was a much abused phrase, attached to policies that were the antithesis of a supply-chain-wide, inclusive, co-operative and incremental approach to continuous improvement. Just-in-time meant JIT tool changing or JIT delivery schedules, depending on the audience, but never JIT supply chain management.
