The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) made an operating loss of £587,551 in the financial year ended 31 December 2009. This compares with a surplus of £96,363 in 2008.

Revenue fell by 20% from £6.574m to £5.308m. Costs were reduced by £581,000 to £5.896m, with 11 staff made redundant during the year.

Q2 demand rose by 16.5% ahead of expectations of 10.8%.

Simon Church has stepped down as group business development director at technology staffing specialist ReThink Recruitment.

The group says Church intends to resign as a director to pursue ambitions outside of the group, with effect from a date to be agreed but is expected to be near the end of this year and will remain with ReThink until such time.  

Technical and engineering recruiter Morson says that despite a challenging trading environment, its business model has resulted in good customer retention and new business wins.

In a trading statement, the company says the trading performance of the group for the first half of the financial year has been in line with directors’ expectations.

This is to allow those working within recruitment and other sectors such as HR to have a chance to make their comments which will help the REC’s Academy for Business shape its official qualifications to meet the ever-changing needs of the industry.

Almost half of UK recruiters are in good health, according to Plimsoll’s latest Industry Analysis of 1,000 companies.

The data shows that 456 of the 1,000 firms analysed are “powering ahead”. Conversely, the report finds 149 firms in trouble, while 159 are set to be taken over.

LinkedIn has proved a valuable tool as an assistance to headhunting. It will never replace good, old-fashioned hard work, but like many things it provides that link or breadcrumb that gives you a route into a company from which great referrals can come.
