The number of people unemployed in the UK fell 23,000 to 1.69m for the three months to December, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This brings the unemployment rate down to 5.5%, from 5.6% for the previous quarter. The employment level was 29.04m, up 51,000.

Average earnings, including bonuses, were up 4% on a year ago, and up 3.7% when bonuses were excluded.
SThree, primarily an information communication technologies (ICT) recruiter, said it was looking to build on the strong growth it had enjoyed in 2006, with further international expansion.

The firm generated revenue of £393.3m in the year to November 2006, up 24.8% on a year earlier.
