Jobs growth was maintained at “solid pace” in December, according to the latest Report on Jobs from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG.

The report reveals permanent staff placements and temporary staff billings both continued to rise in December, though the rates of growth recorded were slightly weaker than the three-month highs of November.

The government’s new Employer’s Charter will give employers more confidence to hire staff, according to Prime Minister David Cameron. The government added that in the next few months it will consider the requirements on employers when they take on staff to ensure that it is as simple and straightforward as possible.

The number of businesses failing in the UK fell by more than 10% in January on the same period last year, according to the latest Insolvency Index from Experian.

The index reveals 1,266 businesses failed in January 2011 compared with 1,426 in January 2010.
