The European Union’s 2010 employment targets now seem unobtainable, as the downturn grips the EU member states.

Targets set in the Lisbon treaty, signed in 2000, had aimed for an overall  unemployment rate of 4% or less across the union and 70% overall employment rate.

Job losses in the construction sector rose at record levels, according to March’s figures from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) and Markit.

The Association of Labour Providers (ALP) has called upon the European Commission (EC) to begin infraction proceedings against the British government following its decision to extend the Accession States Workers Registration Scheme for a further two years.

The scheme forces workers from eight EU members to pay a £90 fee when they start work in the UK. 

The number of job offers for contractors in the IT sector doubled in March, the third monthly increase in a row.

The research by pre-employment screening firm Powerchex recorded the increase after a 30% boost in January and 11% in February.

The UK has retained its opt-out from the European Working Time Directive.

Recruiters will be hit by the long-term fall-out from the recession, according to a new survey.   

Seven out of 10 in-house recruiters surveyed by HR search & selection firm Oakleaf Partnership, said the long-term impact of the recession would be a reduction in the need to use recruitment firms. 

Specialist insurance and actuarial recruiter The Emerald Group has responded to increased demand in the Far East by taking on three new staff.

Steve Stubbings, managing director of The Emerald Group, told Recruiter  there was an increasing need for experienced insurance and actuarial staff in Hong Kong, Singapore and China. 

Job boards are calling for fundamental changes to the regulations governing them as the consultation period on proposed changes to the Conduct Regulations 2003 ends on 11 June.

At present the regulations apply to all recruiters, including job boards. They require that they carry out a number of suitability checks on candidates, such as ID checks and verification of qualifications.

Multi-sector staffing firm Cpl Resources has acquired the business and assets of Kenny Whelan & Associates from David Carson, Deloitte, Receiver.

Cpl says the purchase will secure the position of employees and contractors of Kenny Whelan.
