Aspiring pilots can apply to join fully-funded training programme

Flight training typically costs in excess of £100k.

The programme has been developed to support Jet2.com’s growth, enabling the leisure airline to fly more customers away to enjoy their holidays on an expanding fleet of aircraft.

Jet2FlightPath is open to candidates from all backgrounds (subject to meeting the application criteria) and aims to boost social mobility and promote diversity within the pilot community. To apply, candidates need at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and a science subject, or equivalent qualifications – making Jet2FlightPath more accessible than other programmes.

The selection process, including assessments and interviews, will see successful candidates invited to take their place on a fully funded 18-month Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) training course in the UK, Spain or US, with courses starting this year. Upon completion of the ATPL course, trainees will then be offered Type Rating training on either an Airbus or Boeing aircraft, before becoming a Jet2.com pilot. Three partners set to deliver this training are Skyborne Airline Academy, Leading Edge and FTE Jerez.

When completing the Jet2FlightPath pilot training programme, trainees will also be fully immersed in the operation and culture at Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, “so that they can understand all the qualities that make up the businesses”, a company statement said. This includes gaining exposure to various customer-facing roles such as cabin crew and ground operations.

Jet2.com plans to put 60 pilots through Jet2FlightPath in the first year of the programme and then expand it to attract “even more” aspiring pilots in the coming years as the company continues to grow, the company said.

The UK’s third largest airline currently employs over 1,800 pilots and will operate a fleet of up to 135 aircraft this summer, flying customers to sun and leisure city destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands from 13 UK airport bases.

The brand-new Jet2FlightPath programme opens for applications today [13 May 2025]. Pilots of the future can find out further information as well as how to apply by clicking here.

London-wide recruitment initiative looks for people who are Proud to Care

Proud to Care London (#ProudtoCare) is seeking to recruit both experienced and non-experienced candidates for the care work, which also includes looking after recovering Covid-19 sufferers when they leave hospital.

In addition to experienced care workers, Proud to Care London is also looking for people who may have lost their jobs as a result of the Covid-19 economic crash in hospitality, retail or even simply had customer care training. These career fields would have transferrable skills to offer care work, says Angela O’Connor, a member of the #ProudtoCare co-ordination team.

Proud to Care London is an online job portal, linking people into crucial care sector jobs. It is being carried out through and working in partnership with Social Work England, the Department for Education, the Department of Health and Social Care, the Local Government Association, London Councils and care sector recruitment agencies.

Initially developed for the North London councils of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington, #ProudtoCare has been extended as a pan-London offering through a 16-person team including volunteers from the boroughs and OFSTED.

According to O’Connor, an HR professional, the recruitment process includes providing information about care work, registration and a 20-minute phone interview designed to gauge candidates’ fit and aptitude for care work. Given the high-contact, highly personal and sometimes intimate nature of care work, O’Connor said: “We felt it important to get people to deselect themselves if they didn’t feel comfortable with the nature of the work. We want to continue [the process] with people with the right values and skills.”

If selected, care workers will be deployed to work in the London borough they live in based on the borough’s needs. But “if one borough’s in trouble and asks us, ‘Can we divert someone to us,’ then yes we can,” O’Connor said.

Although the sector is widely known as paying low wages, Proud to Care organisers point out that the work is very rewarding. The new care workers will receive two free days of online training around such on-the-job practices as lifting procedures and a free Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Ealing Council is among Proud to Care’s advocates and users, and is recruiting care workers, care managers, social workers, occupational therapists, chefs and cleaners. Adecco is working with Ealing on its recruitment needs.

According to Jill Pearce, Ealing’s head of learning & development, the initial aim is to recruit into the temporary positions for helping people to get back on their feet and regain their independence. The largest number of jobs on offer are for “reablement” helpers, she said.

With the main focus on temporary work during the pandemic, once it is over, there could be individuals who decide they would like to stay in the profession as a career or those who “would like to take the odd shift”, Pearce said.

Pearce said that Ealing had not yet seen a significant increase in potential end-users but “there is an expectation there may be”.

With training offered for people who take on the roles, Pearce said a challenge looming ahead for care training providers is determining how various offerings can be delivered on more platforms that are “safe and secure”.

O’Connor said she hoped that the Covid-19 crisis would raise awareness of the significant value of care workers and society’s need for the services they provide with a view toward better pay and working conditions.

A statement today from London Councils said the campaign has resulted to date in 823 registrations, with about half coming from people with either personal or professional care experience.

Campaign launches to Keep Britain Working during Covid-19 crisis

The campaign, which aims to preserve lives and protect livelihoods, looks to redeploy UK workers from struggling sectors into in-demand ones and help people who have lost their jobs find news ones.

It launches today [20 April] as a result of cross-industry business leaders and politicians coming together in the wake of predictions by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) that the UK economy could shrink by 35%, resulting in a total of 3.4m people becoming unemployed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the OBR predictions, this would mean 2m people losing their jobs this spring.

The campaign has been launched on keepbritainworking.com. It will encourage businesses and workers to make pledges to #KeepBritainWorking both during the crisis and beyond, a statement from the campaign said.

James Reed, chairman of the REED recruitment business, is co-founder of Keep Britain Working. He said the potential economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic could be disastrous, and businesses should work together, sharing ideas, resources and support.

“We’re on a mission to Keep Britain Working,” Reed said. “We’ll do this by sharing the best ideas, advice and guidance to support businesses and workers, by connecting those who have lost their jobs from sectors that are struggling to those that are in demand, and by inspiring people across the nation to focus on how, where and when we work, once we move away from the current challenges.”

Supporting the movement are Lord Alan Sugar; James Timpson, CEO of Timpson; Severn Trent CEO Liv Garfield; and JCB’s Lord Bamford. MPs Penny Mordaunt, Steven Brine and Caroline Nokes, and MSP Jamie Hepburn, and the CBI are also on board.

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) also support the drive.

Recruiter has contacted the campaign to obtain details about how the effort will be carried out. We will update you once we have further information.
