Heidrick & Struggles has launched a new Government & Defense Tech Practice, aimed at serving the growing demand for technology leadership within public sector organisations. With governments estimated to account for 10% of global technology and IT services spending, the firm sees this as a significant market opportunity. The practice consolidates the company’s experience from over 200 engagements to provide leadership solutions for organisations delivering technology to national, state and local governments worldwide.

The new practice will support clients by offering leadership search, development and organisational effectiveness services. It brings together more than 30 experienced partners across sectors such as IT services, aerospace and defence, energy and private equity, operating globally across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The initiative addresses the increasing reliance of governments on advanced technologies like AI, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and robotics.

• Workforce management solutions firm Matrix has supported more than 10,000 individuals across the UK into employment between March 2024 and April 2025 through its Social Value team. The efforts focused on a wide range of community initiatives, including employability workshops, career guidance and volunteering opportunities. These programmes were designed to help students, jobseekers and public sector employees gain essential skills and access new career pathways.

• UK start-up Project Brains has launched ProdigyPB, an AI-powered platform designed to revolutionise job description creation and recruitment. Tailored for SMEs, growing businesses, and HR teams, ProdigyPB helps define precise hiring needs by aligning job roles with specific business challenges. The tool generates clear, bias-free job descriptions in seconds and enables users to engage with vetted fractional specialists from Project Brains’ talent pool, according to a company statement. ProdigyPB is currently available in Beta across the UK.

Jobmatch Sweden, a leader in occupational psychological testing, is expanding in Norway through a new partnership with consulting firm Sund Raad. Sund Raad, which focuses on enhancing employee engagement for small and medium-sized businesses, will integrate Jobmatch’s DNV-certified Talent test into its services. This marks Jobmatch’s second partnership in Norway, following its 2022 collaboration with Hapro Jobb og Karriere. Jobmatch Talent is a scientifically validated tool used for recruitment and employee development, according to the company press release.

• STEM recruitment specialist Matchtech has launched STEM Futures, a free, on-demand employability platform aimed at helping young people break into engineering and technology careers. The programme includes expert-led sessions on job search strategies, CV writing, interviews and personal development, and is part of Matchtech’s broader initiative to address the STEM skills gap and support emerging talent.

In addition, Matchtech has awarded the first two grants from its Materna Fund, a £2.5k bursary created to support engineering students facing financial hardship. The inaugural recipients, Sergio Carreno Vargas and David Sarembock from the University of Portsmouth, are using the funds to focus on their studies and development without the added pressure of financial strain.

Meet Life Sciences has launched Synergy, a new standalone service designed to tackle people capability challenges in the life sciences sector that go beyond recruitment. As part of Meet’s evolution into a full-service talent solutions partner, Synergy offers tailored support in areas like workforce planning, leadership development, skills mapping, culture embedding and organisational design. Led by vice-president Kirsty Wilson, the service is built specifically for the life sciences industry and is focused on delivering measurable, outcome-driven solutions. Unlike traditional consulting, Synergy provides hands-on support from design through to implementation, helping clients build the capability needed to grow, adapt and lead in a competitive global market.

Right Management, part of ManpowerGroup, has launched a refreshed brand strategy called ‘The Right Way’. It’s a human-centred, data-backed framework that aligns workforce development with business strategy. The new identity centres on ‘The Right Way loop’, a distinctive visual element with modern colours and typography that will be used across all brand touchpoints.

National student lettings agency launches apprenticeship scheme

In a bid to support young people and grow skilled and knowledgeable individuals for the student lettings sector, loc8me recently launched its 18-month programme, which is open to anyone aged 16-18. The scheme will offer hands-on experience, mentorship and the opportunity to engage in paid work.

Raffaele Russo, founder of loc8me, said: “We’re thrilled to launch this apprenticeship programme, giving young professionals a real chance to learn, grow and begin building a career in an exciting industry.

“Now more than ever, young people are seeking opportunities, guidance and goals to pursue. With this programme, we’re investing in their future – and in the future of the lettings sector.”

Apprentices will have the chance to study the theoretical and practical elements of the lettings industry, and on starting, they will be given a mentor from the loc8me team to support their development via regular meetings throughout the course.

loc8me now operates in 13 major university cities across the UK, including Loughborough, Durham, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Newcastle, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester, Hull, Bath and Bristol.

• Global human capital management (HCM) technology firm Ceridian has launched Dayforce Career Explorer, an AI-powered solution to help improve engagement and retention by empowering employees to manage their careers. Dayforce Career Explorer provides employees with access to data-driven career pathing, opportunities for learning and development, and job notifications for open roles that match their skills and interests.

• RetailTech recruitment brand Storm5 has opened a new office at Axel-Springer-Platz 3 in Hamburg, Germany. Benedict Rippstain will lead a team of 14 RetailTech specialist consultants at Storm5, which was founded in 2021 by Olivier Kerckhove. Under Rippstain’s leadership, the team aims to grow through the addition of another academy by the end of this year. Storm5 covers a range of spaces within the RetailTech industry including e-commerce, MarTech, supply chain and logistics, and in-store technology.

Sonovate, a provider of embedded finance and payment solutions for the contingent workforce, has enhanced its funding technology platform to better serve large, multinational recruitment businesses and launch new lines of products in the future. The new platform gives customers the ability to optimise cashflow, allowing them to access funding in multiple-currencies and across multiple-sectors, with tailored pricing based on the risk profile of the industry being served to allow customers to secure the best possible rates.

Customers are able to view multiple ledgers across the new platform, whether they’re obtaining funding for invoices related to permanent or contract workers, or different subsidiaries of their business. Next Ventures, a technology consulting and staffing solutions company headquartered in London, has opened a new office in Manhattan, New York City. The firm says the Manhattan office will serve as a “strategic” base to support its mission to connect technology talent with organisations across core practice areas. IT staffing executive Kyle Vyas, with more than 20 years’ experience in the industry, will lead the expansion.

• HM Government and The SANS Institute, a global provider of cyber security training, have partnered to launch the Upskill in Cyber training programme to help UK professionals make a career change into cyber security. The programme, lasting 14 weeks, offers training, career advice and interview practice to help UK workers change careers into cyber security roles. So far, it has trained over 200 students with non-cyber backgrounds. Many have gone on to secure guaranteed job interviews upon successful completion of the training programme.

Bar and restaurant operator creates over 200 jobs at London venue

Setting its sights on a grand opening next spring, the hospitality and entertainment experts will give the Jungle Cave site (formerly Rainforest Café) a bohemian makeover. The Shaftesbury Avenue venue will be the fourth Albert’s Schloss in the UK, plus the first for the South of England.

Albert’s Schloss venues currently operate in Manchester (pictured), Birmingham and most recently Liverpool.

Roy Ellis, CEO of Mission Mars, said: “It’s a stunning 18,000sq ft space in the famous Trocadero in the heart of the West End. The Trocadero has a long and rich history of hosting world renowned restaurants, bars and theatres.

“Ludwig’s Tavern, our Alpine inspired chalet, is a tribute to ‘Mad King Ludwig’ of Bavaria and is filled with whimsical design elements as well as roaring fires, shuffleboard and other tavern games. As in other cities, Schloss will recruit the best artistic talent available and offer totally unique and unlike anywhere else entertainment seven days a week.”

Close to Piccadilly Circus, the new London venue will create 200 jobs across the board once it opens in spring 2024, including managers, chefs, bartenders, servers and hosts. The entertainment venue will also be a new home to over 100 freelance artists, with headline events including the Kunst Kabaret, Baby Grand Slam and Friday Frolich.

STEM recruiter Gattaca consolidates its brands

Its brands include Barclay Meade and Alderwood, which focus on the professional services sectors; IT and telecoms specialists Networkers and Resourcing Solutions; and engineering recruitment firm Matchtech.

The restructure will see Networkers and Resourcing Solutions adopt the Matchtech brand, simplifying the process for customers to connect to skilled workers nationwide. Alderwood will align with Barclay Meade.

Commenting on the restructuring, CEO of Gattaca and Matchtech Recruitment Matthew Wragg said: “In recent years, engineering has become more closely aligned with technology creating broader opportunities. As a result, more varied roles incorporating a fusion of digital, engineering and technology proficiencies have opened, particularly within cloud computing, cybersecurity and software development, which are integral to the STEM sector.

“These skills align with our strategy to fortify our standing in the recruitment market and provide an expanded array of services to our STEM clients and candidates.

Matchtech has also launched a dedicated new website to reflect its changes.

• The Freelancer and Contractor Services Association (FCSA) has launched a contractor payslip review initiative to educate and protect contractors and give them a voice in the industry. Umbrella employees can upload their payslip and reconciliation statement, which will be checked by FCSA via an independent payslip verification service. This will tell them if the calculations are correct, and ensure contractors are properly informed of the deductions their umbrella provider has made. As a result, they’ll be assured that they’re meeting their tax obligations.

It’s available to employees of any umbrella company, not just those who are FCSA Members. The service is also completely confidential, and the user’s identity will never be disclosed to umbrella companies without prior permission. Initially, results will be aimed to be given within seven working days.
