IBM survey finds UK business leaders expect 25% of workforce need to retrain

An IBM survey has found that a large number of UK respondents expect roughly 25% of the workforce would need retraining as a result of artificial intelligence (AI).

A report published today [30 April 2024] by IBM reveals that 83% of UK business leaders expect at least a quarter of the workforce to be reskilled in response to GenAI and automation in the next three years, with 38% claiming it to be over half the workforce.

Also revealed in the report:

  • Almost half (48%) of UK business leaders admit to needing more support on skills development and learning in AI, with 44% wanting more opportunities to experience AI in action.
  • When it came to improving female participation in AI, mentoring programmes were identified as the most popular solution, with 36% believing they would be effective in boosting participation.
  • Other highly-ranked solutions were improving access to re-skilling programmes and initiatives (31%) and increasing representation at middle-management level (31%).
  • 20% of UK respondents pointed to a lack of interest in diversity and inclusion from tech companies themselves as a barrier to getting more women into leadership positions.

Over 4,000 senior business decision makers across the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Italy were surveyed for the report, Female Leadership in the Age of AI UK Report.
