Flexible immigration top priority to keep labour market strong

Making the immigration system more flexible is a top priority for keeping the labour market strong in 2023, according to a recent poll of recruiters by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).

The poll, taken at an REC knowledge-sharing event, found 66% (the largest number) ranking immigration system flexibility as the most needed measure during this year.

Encouraging firms to recruit from a most diverse talent base was chosen by the second highest number (50%) of recruiters, with involving recruiters in workforce and skills planning in third place, scoring 45%.

The other responses were:

  • Additional government support on childcare – 32%
  • Reforming or repealing EU legislation – 26%
  • Reforming the Apprenticeship Levy at 21%.
