Recruiters: go again, and go even better in 2022

I am going to share the words of our group managing director, Andrew Michael, from an internal post he sent to the business during the first week back from the festive season.

As a sector we enjoyed a fabulous 2021 and I loved reading Andy’s narrative. A narrative that I thought applied to us all in the recruitment industry.

“Not sure about you but in my experience the first few days of January can often be tricky to navigate. We’ve all been off on such a long break, which can definitely play its part. We’ve got very cold and dark mornings to contend with. Maybe you’re starting dry January, or even Veganuary? Or, maybe you're trying hard to do more exercise to work off Christmas excesses, as well as nursing a wallet that can feel lighter than you wanted it to... For all these reasons and more, it can be a bit of a mental challenge.

But for lots of reasons and it’s not an exaggeration to say that last week was the single best first week back after Christmas that I can ever remember.

I loved spending a little bit of time reflecting and reviewing December and our 2021 performance, which was jam-packed full of record performances for so many businesses and so many individuals.

Let’s also remember that we’re operating in the best marketplace we’ve seen for decades AND we all heard before Christmas that the opportunities ahead with growth and expansion. So, it was difficult not to have a little spring in my step, even in those tricky first few days back.

One thing to add though: 2022 is the Goodman Masson equivalent of that difficult second album. Doing something amazing and then going one better!

Nirvana, Kanye, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Public Enemy, Radiohead, Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Adele – and there are many others – all went back-to-back going one better with their second albums. They delivered something special and then did it all over again, but they did it even better. And that’s exactly what we've now got to do in 2022.

2021 is behind us, and it’s a lovely piece of GM history, so now let’s go again with doing it even better in 2022.

So, let’s be greedy through this year and absolutely crush it.”

As a sector if we all absolutely crush it, the impact we can have helping our clients grow and helping people find new and exciting opportunities will be significant. We sit at the centre of the UK economy and the role we play in businesses success is huge.

How? Redefine performance; play a key role in your team’s success and make it stronger; bring untold optimism to work every day; help and care about those you work with; set an uncompromising example; ensure you remember that work is balanced with a life outside of the office; and love what you do.

A narrative that applies to us all.
