Non-recruitment non-exec directors join REC board

Four new non-executive directors from outside the recruitment industry have joined the board of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), following a year-long overhaul of the organisation’s governance.

“Earlier this year, members of the REC voted to approve REC Council recommendations on modernising how the REC is run,” an REC statement said. “This included making space for a more diverse range of talent and experience, creating four new non-executive director positions appointed from outside the recruitment industry.”

The new NEDs are:

  • Sakhila Mirza, executive board director and general counsel at the London Bullion Market Association. She is a qualified lawyer and a specialist in compliance and corporate governance.
  • Dr Gopa Nair is a chief operating officer in the NHS where he leads a business improvement programme for GP practices in Surrey. He is a strategist and business transformation expert.
  • Jane Rumble is currently leading Ofcom’s policy response to Covid-19 as interim deputy group director of the Consumer and External Relations Group.
  • Jon Sibson is pro vice-chancellor of the Faculty of Business at the University of Greenwich where he also sits on the university’s senior leadership team. Previously, he held senior positions at PwC.

The other members of the REC board are all representatives from the recruitment industry and were elected by the previous REC Council to take up board seats. In future, the REC statement said, these seats will be elected by REC members at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting. The industry members are:

  • Sarah Thewlis (chair), MD, Thewlis Graham Associates
  • Jeanette Barrowcliffe, FD, Meridian Business Support
  • Neil Carberry, CEO, REC
  • Mark Edwards, CEO, SERT
  • Rebekah Handford, MD, Highpoint
  • Michelle Mellor, MD, Cummins Mellor
  • Heather Salway, group HR director, nGAGE
