Job Centres set to double number of work coaches

News reports over the weekend suggest that the doubling of work coaches at the UK’s Job Centres to help the increasing number of unemployed people into jobs will be announced on Wednesday [8 July].

The increase from 13,500 to 27,000 job centre staff, estimated to cost £800k, will see the first 4,500 in place by October, according to the reports.

The additional provision for Job Centres is expected to be part of an economic recovery package to be unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Job centres are set for more face-to-face meetings with jobseekers from today, the reports say.

The BBC says that the chancellor is also expected to pledge an extra £32m for recruiting extra careers advisers and £17m for work academies in England.

Labour has called on more targeted support to prevent job losses, in the week following the announcements of thousands of job cuts at major UK brands.
