The charity, whose name stands for Available Skills for Training, Refreshing, Improvement, Innovation and Development, helps people with long-term, chronic illness to find meaningful work. It was founded by former Royal Navy Commander David Shutts after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sadly, Shutts died in May.

At the event, held on 6 December at Salesforce Towers in the City of London, chairman Steve Shutts (pictured) – who is David’s brother – thanked supporters, fundraisers and employers and showcased two new videos, which he hoped would encourage more organisations to tap into the 'invisible talent pool' to fill the skill shortages, and make a difference to someone’s life. He also announced that the charity would be getting fresh branding and an improved website in the new year.

Jimmy McLoughlin, special adviser in business and technology to the Prime Minister, added his support for ASTRiiD’s work, saying it was an “amazing charity” that helped the long-term sick into work by connecting them to employers.
