Gurkha regiment to recruit women from 2020

The Gurkhas are to allow female recruits for the first time from 2020.

The Telegraph reports the Nepalese regiment, which has been a part of the British Army for more than 200 years, will open its recruitment out to women next year – and the first recruits could be in the UK for training by 2020.

The recruitment process takes place in Pokhara, central Nepal, and the selection process will be the same as for the men. Successful applicants are then flown to Catterick, North Yorkshire, for a 10-week training programme.

The paper adds the move follows plans to increase the 3,000-strong Brigade of Gurkhas by a further 800 troops.
