GLAA joins Greater Manchester Police in exploitation operation at car wash

Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) officers have conducted a joint operation with Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
The team targeted a car wash in the south of Manchester, suspected of exploiting workers.
Eight workers were interviewed by the GLAA at the car wash on Monday 25 June, with referrals also submitted to the HMRC National Minimum Wage unit.
The operation saw the GLAA work with GMP’s Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking team, neighbourhood officers and environmental health after intelligence to the Modern Slavery Helpline suggested possible exploitation of up to 10 workers at the premises. The tip-off was alongside community-led intelligence about other potential criminal activity at the car wash.
In addition to the possible NMW breaches, police found suspected stolen car parts, which they are investigating.
While no arrests have been made at this stage, the investigation continues.
