Attracting light enough talent is a weighty issue for horse racing industry

The shortage of talent and the difficulty of finding staff is a serious issue for many UK industries and sectors, but for Britain’s horseracing industry it has become a truly weighty issue.
According to an article in The Telegraph the British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA’s) submission to the government’s Migration Advisory Committee in October included reference to how the rising weight of the UK’s adult population means that work riders – or grooms (those who exercise the horses in training) – are harder to find.
In a statement highlighting its concerns that Brexit will worsen the situation, the BHA tells Recruiter: “Given wider trends on weight and fitness, the proportion of the UK worker population who are ideally placed to ride thoroughbreds is decreasing.”
Not knowing anything about the subject, Recruiter suggests that feeding horses more so they become bigger and stronger might need to be included in every stable lad and lasses job description. Not sure they’ll go for that option though…
