Jobseekers get a shot at a new role with YoungCapital

A recruitment agency in the Netherlands has hit upon a rather unusual approach to get candidates to relax at interview – by offering them a joint or shot of alcohol.

In a statement, Dutch recruiter YoungCapital revealed the idea came from a youth panel it enlisted the help of, who told them applicants liked the idea of a shot of alcohol or a joint to help them relax. YoungCapital aims at finding students and first-time jobseekers their first role.

The recruiter’s poll of 2.7m candidates revealed most opted for an alcoholic drink or a joint in response to being asked what helps them relax at interview.

A testing period revealed candidates were indeed more relaxed – especially after 0.3 grams of marijuana, with the company adding that as soon as it receives its liquor licence it will go live with its ‘One Shot’ project. This will most likely be in May – so long as candidates can provide their ID, of course.

Commenting on the company’s move, YoungCapital founder Hugo de Koning said while he was at first hesitant about the idea, he was surprised at how positive youngsters were about the plan.

“I was sceptical at first, but after a few test interviews, I was absolutely convinced. The conversations were more natural. Candidates are obviously not wasted after just one shot. But they are more relaxed.

“We move with the times. As a candidate you only have one shot to make a good impression. And we would like to help them achieve this.”
