Goldsmith could face tough community order next week

Gary Goldsmith, who yesterday pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife by beating, could be made to carry out unpaid work, be the subject to a curfew and have to meet other requirements, based on remarks made in court yesterday.

Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot ruled out a custodial sentence, but indicated that she would be looking to impose a community order on Goldsmith. After probation reports have been completed, Goldsmith is due to be sentenced at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 21 November.
