An applicant for a janitor’s job has accidentally shot himself while waiting for an interview at a Florida Panhandle elementary school.

US newspaper The News Herald reports the applicant, Anthony Holland, a part-time jail guard, decided to replace a spent round in his Derringer revolver before storing it in a secure compartment of the truck he was waiting in.

A Panama City Police report said Holland shot himself in the thigh and was treated at a local hospital.

Police initially said the incident did not warrant criminal charges, as law enforcement officers are exempt from a state law preventing guns on school grounds.

But the Panama City Police Department is still investigating, along with the Bay County Sheriff's Office, which runs the jail at which Holland works.
