US contract doctor provider TeamHealth is to acquire IPC Healthcare for $1.6bn (£1.02bn).

The deal allows TeamHealth to expand into IPC’s specialism of post-acute care such as nursing homes.

In a statement, TeamHealth president and chief executive Mike Snow said his company would be “better positioned to capitalise on key trends as the US healthcare industry”.

The combined company will have 15,000 healthcare professionals on its books.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, subject to regulatory approval.

TeamHealth also announced second quarter revenue of $878m, a 30.1% increase year-on-year.
