While exact ministerial responsibilities are yet to be decided following Prime Minister David Cameron’s appointment of a new Cabinet, new pensions minister Ros Altmann (left) says there is “no chance” that she will not be interested in playing a role in further developing the government’s Fuller Working Lives Framework.

Altmann was appointed pensions minister earlier this week following the Conservative Party’s victory in last week’s general election.

The Framework was launched last summer with the aim of preventing older people leaving the labour market involuntarily. The launch foreshadowed Altmann’s appointment as older workers’ champion.

Her role saw the former director general of Saga publish a report earlier this year on retaining, retraining and recruiting older workers, calling on government to introduce a national strategy to combat “significant evidence” of unconscious bias and age discrimination.

According to government websites responsibility for the Framework lies with new employment minister Priti Patel but Altmann told Recruiter full ministerial responsibilities are yet to be decided.

“We’re working on it. I hope to still be engaged in that area,” she said. “It is something close to my heart. We are going to work that out but there is no chance I won’t be interested in it [the framework].”
