Penguin Random House UK has turned to social network platform Tumblr to find its next generation marketers.
The publishing house this week [16 March] launched The Scheme, an entry-level programme that, according to a company statement, “aims to attract the marketers of tomorrow”.
In the same statement, Penguin Random House UK and international HR director Neil Morrison said The Scheme aimed to break down perceived barriers by “getting creative people who might never have thought about working in publishing to think again”.
The statement continues to say The Scheme is open to everyone – “whether they’re leaving school, college or university or already working”.
Tumblr was chosen as the recruitment platform because it was a “highly popular social network among 18-34-year-olds” and was a “hub for innovative and creative minds”.
Morrison said through Tumblr, “we’re able to reach young people in the places where they’re already spending their time online”.
Rather than submitting a CV, applicants need to respond to seven questions designed around the seven qualities the company is looking for. These are: a passion for the company’s purpose; ideas and ability to make them happen; curiosity; ambition; being digitally minded and social media savvy; being persuasive; and being adaptable.
Candidates making it through to the next round will need to complete a creative challenge via a video interview platform before attending selection days.
The publishing house will take on four successful candidates in September for a 13-month paid programme in addition to two six-month marketing placements within its publishing divisions.
