Fri, 6 Mar 2015The volume of both permanent and temporary placements made by UK recruiters has grown to their highest levels since autumn 2014, according to the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC)/KPMG ‘Report on Jobs’.

The report’s seasonally adjusted index, measuring perm placement activity among recruiters, posted a reading of 59.5 in February, up from 56.8 in January and the index’s highest reading since October 2014.

Any reading over 50 indicates growth.

The volume of temp/contract billings made by recruiters also increased to a reading of 62.1, three points up on January and the first time the index has posted a reading of 62 or more since September of last year.

Overall demand for staff increased at its strongest rate for four months, with both perm and temp workers seeing faster increases, while candidate availability decreased further in February.

The demand for candidates has consequently driven up pay, with 29.2% of recruiters reporting that starting salaries are higher than last month. Pay growth was especially strong in the Midlands, where 38.1% of recruiters reported higher starting salaries for candidates.

Across recruitment sectors, engineering professionals were the most sought after category for permanent staff, ahead of nursing/medical/care, while for temp appointments, nursing/medical/care continues to hold top spot of most in demand types of worker by industry.
