Renewable energy projects in India to create 1m jobs

Tue, 17 Feb 2015India’s goal to expand its solar energy output significantly by 2022 could create more than 1m jobs, and similar plans for wind energy could add a further 180,000 posts.

According to a report from the New York City-based Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and India’s Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), the project planning, construction, installation and operations required to meet the country’s solar energy goal could generate 1m jobs in less than a decade.

And that projection did not include positions created in the manufacturing sector, which would provide “significant jobs opportunity”, the NRDC said.

Expansion of India’s wind energy programmes could create 183,500 jobs, it added.

Solar and wind energy projects have already created about 70,000 jobs, the NRDC said.

Last November, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to increase the country’s solar energy output to 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2022.

India’s wind energy target is 60GW by 2022.
